How Does It Work ?
TravelMapper is all about using a map that shows what you are looking for. We believe that one look at a map says more than a thousand words.
TRAVELMAPPER’S FUNCTIONALITY :
MULTIMODAL ROUTING On TravelMapper there are routing options for 6 different modes of transportation (car, plane, train, ferry, bus, walk, and cycle). Routing on TravelMapper means that our system selects which path to best follow for cars, planes, trains, and others. For example, if you select a car, the system will choose which roads would be best to follow, and plots that on the map. Selecting a train will follow the best train track, and plots that on the map. A ferry the best waterway. A walker the best path, and so on.

Multimodal routing on our website means that a sequence of several modes of transport can be mapped as one actual itinerary. For example you choose to first travel by car, then to take a flight, and then to travel by car again. This is what it will show: a drive from A to B, a flight from B to C, and a drive from C to D, all showing as one itinerary on the map. Travelmapper’s system knows about public transport services (bus, train, aeroplane, and ferries), and transportation networks (roads, footpaths, and cycle routes), and will give you the best available travel options to choose from.
PLAN A TRIP To make sure that you are able to plan your trip in a way that suits you, we have created 3 options to plan your trip: OPTION 1: Fill in the search box on the top to zoom in to the area you would like to visit. Then you can have a look around on the map, and choose from the accommodation, points-of-interest (POIs), and things-to-do options, and plot any onto the map by clicking on them. Once on the map, you can choose to 1. map them as drawn markers, 2. to map a route, or 3. to request more travel options. about Option 2: Zoom in to an area you would like to visit, and click to start drawing points or a route on the map. As with option 1, you can add accommodation, points-of-interest (POIs), and things-to-do to your trip if you wish to. about Option 3: Fill in the location boxes with places you would like to visit, and let TravelMapper point those on the map, or create an itinerary for you. about Travel Options If, for you chosen itinerary, there are different ‘travel options’ available, TravelMapper will show this with small icons on the top right on the map. The icons are numbered and each icons shows the travel option that is available. When you move your cursor over one of the numbered icons, you will get more information on that travel option. Clicking on one of them, will show that option on the map. Then you can choose to add that option to your trip, or save it for later. FIND A TRIP For existing tours, you can go to the ‘Find a Trip’ section of the website. All the dots on the map represent tours provided by different tour operators. You can zoom in and compare them by clicking on the dot. To narrow down your search you can use the drop down menu on the left side of the page. For departure dates, availability and booking just click on the link that will take you through to the provider of that tour. You can also save the trip to your personal TripBook when you are logged in to your account. DISTANCE AND DURATION CALCULATIONS The distance and duration are estimates, based on the data that we receive from Google. BOOKING AND SERVICE You can use TravelMapper as a global travel planner, and make FREE use of all its functionality. TravelMapper is not a booking website, but many of our users require bookings options, so we thought it would be a good idea to include links to websites that can help you with that. You can also book transportation (flights, car rental, shuttle, taxi, and more), accommodation (hotels, campsites, villas, and more), and things-to-do (guided tours, events, and more) through the links. All bookings are directly between you (the customer) and the provider of the service or good.

Upon booking, you are most likely to receive a confirmation from the provider. All providers run their own booking system, so please be advised to read their terms and conditions, as those apply to your booking. If a confirmation email contains a ticket, please read further instructions on how to obtain and use that ticket. If you are left with any questions, contact the provider’s customer service.

No payments go directly through TravelMapper, and although we have done our best to only work with the most reliable and like-minded partners, it is your responsibility to make sure you feel confortable with the booking and the provider of a service or good.

It may be that some of the providers don’t provide an online booking service. Please contact them by telephone, visit their website, or send them an email. Please quote the trip code as this will help our website going. Please be assured that you won’t pay anything more coming from our website, or booking directly with them.

FAQs
ABOUT TRAVELMAPPER

What is TravelMapper?

TravelMapper is a travel planning tool based on Google Maps. You can find existing tours that are offered by tour operators, or it allows you to be your own tour operator and create your own tour on the map, add various travel components to your trip and create your next exiting travel adventure all on one webpage.

What is TravelMapper not?

We are not a booking or price comparison website. We are here for you to map out your next holiday. To add all your desired components to it (like accommodation, things-to-do, flights and more) so you have a completely ready to go tour to travel. Furthermore we are here for your convenience, to inspire you and to allow you to search through all the available existing tours, book them and travel them.

When was TravelMapper founded?

TravelMapper has evolved since 2013, when our founder Alexandra van Dijk first had the idea to visualize existing tours on a map for inspiration, and to make comparison and booking a lot easier. The second part of the idea was to create a platform to give the option for anyone to be their own tour operator. There has been a bit of hoop jumping along the way, but thanks to all the support we have received, we are where we are now.

What languages is TravelMapper available in?

At the moment, TravelMapper is available in English. In the near future we will be offering our platform and services in other languages as well.

Who can use the TravelMapper website?

Anyone can use TravelMapper. Whether you are an individual, a tour operator, or a travel agent, TravelMapper can help you to plan a trip, present a trip on the map for a client, or just find interesting stuff to do. TravelMapper is a free and global travel planner tool.

Is TravelMapper a travel agency?

No TravelMapper is not a travel agent. A travel agent might use Travel Mapper to present tours to their clients, but we don’t make any bookings through our website.

How does TravelMapper make money?

There is no charge to use TravelMapper, and the prices you find through links from our website are exactly the same as if you would book through the provider’s website directly. We receive some affiliation commission on bookings that are being made through our trusted tour operators and from other travel-component suppliers, and that helps to keep us going. We send cookies, and receive some cake in return for making an effort.

Is there a mobile app?

We do have a mobile friendly website, but no app yet. Our website is in Beta, which means we are developing and improving continuously. When we believe the functionality is more or less complete we will start working on the app. Stay tuned and we will inform you about any progress we are making.

Do I have to register before I can use TravelMapper?

You can browse the website without signing up. You can plan a route or find a tour. If you wish to use the save, share, transfer and other comprehensive features, we will ask you to sign-up or sign-in.

How can I contact TravelMapper?

It is best to contact us by filling out the contact form, or to email us at hello@travelmapper.com. What is multimodal routing?

On TravelMapper there are routing options for 6 different modes of transportation (car, plane, train, ferry, bus, walk, and cycle). For example, if you select a car, the system will choose which roads would be best to follow, and plots that on the map. Selecting a train will follow the best train track, and plots that on the map. How can I plan a trip?

To make sure that you are able to plan your trip in a way that suits you, TravelMapper has more ways to plan your trip.
Option 1. Fill in the search box on the top to zoom in to the area you would like to visit. Then you can have a look around on the map, and choose from the accommodation, points-of-interest (POIs), and things-to-do options, and plot any of these onto the map. Once on the map, you can choose to leave them as drawn markers, to get a route, or to request more travel options. about
Option 2. Zoom in to an area you would like to visit, and click to start drawing points or a route on the map. As with option 1, you can add accommodation, points-of-interest (POIs), and things-to-do to your trip if you wish to. about
Option 3. Fill in the location boxes with places you would like to visit, and let TravelMapper point those on the map, or create an itinerary for you. about

What does ‘Drag-and-Drop’ do?

Once you have an itinerary on the map, you can easily reposition your route with the ‘drag-and-drop’ functionality. Just click on any point in the route, and drag it to another point and drop it. The route will automatically reroute. An extra location point will be added to the location box in the menu to the left.

What are ‘Travel Options’?

If there are different ‘travel options’ (different modes of transportation) available for you chosen itinerary, TravelMapper will show this on the top right of the map with little icons on the map. The icons are numbered, and show the travel options that are available. When you move the cursor over it, you will get more information on that travel option. Clicking on one of the travel options, will show that option on the map. Then you can choose to add that option to your trip, or save it for later.

Where can I find trips?

For existing tours, you can go to the ‘Find a Trip’ section of the website. All the dots on the map are tours provided by different tour operators. You can zoom in and compare them by clicking on the dot. To narrow down your search you can use the drop down menu on the left side of the page. For departure dates, availability and booking just click on the link that will take you through to the provider of that tour. You can also save the trip to your personal TripBook when you are logged in to your account.

How are the’ distance’ and the ‘duration’ calculated?

The distance and duration are estimates, based on the data that we receive from Google.

How can I add Viapoints?

You can add viapoints by clicking the + button to the left of the location boxes. You can add viapoints in between boxes or under the last one. Please be aware that if you add or delete a viapoint, it may break a transport connection that was created.

What else can I do with the Viapoints?

You can add a date or a note, and delete or swop them. You only can’t delete the first two start and end points.

How can I look up accommodation, Things-to-Do, and Points-of-Interest on the map? And what’s with the distance slider?

Simply zoom into an area that you would like to visit. Then click e.g. accommodation and select for example hotels. You can use the distance slider so only hotels within a certain distance from your route will show up, or just leave it. You can then look at the hotels and add the ones that you find interesting or want to stay at. You can use ‘add to trip’, ‘save for later’ or the ‘book now’ functionality. The book now will take you straight to the hotels provider’s website.

Why can I look up and add accommodation, Things-to-Do, and Points-of-Interest on the map and to my itinerary?

We have brought in the adding ‘accommodation’, ‘things-to-do’, and ‘points-of-interest’ to trip functionality so that you can: Build your trip around interesting stuff you find on the map. Add interesting things to the itinerary that you’ve created on the map. All together this will give you a complete itinerary (including accommodation, things to do, things to see, flights, car hire, or anything else you would like to add).

What can I use the save, share, transfer, and print options for?

Once you have signed up and logged in, you can use the save, share, transfer, and print functionality of the website. The ‘save’ functionality saves information (tours, itineraries, accommodation, POIs etc.) to your personal TripBook. The ‘share’ functionality allows you to share your trip with your friends on social media websites like Facebook and Twitter. The ‘transfer’ option is for transferring the route onto your GPS. The ‘print’ option is there if you prefer to always have a printed copy handy.
